Creating Space to Succeed: How AccessComputing Supports Disabled Students’ Computing Pathways

Background: Students with disabilities (SWD) remain underrepresented in computing and encounter structural, cultural, and material barriers throughout their educational journeys. Within this landscape of inequity in computing, the Broadening Participation in Computing (BPC) initiative represented one national effort to address underrepresentation and expand access across diverse communities in the US. Examining how disability-focused BPC programs influence students’ experiences and trajectories can illuminate how to foster more inclusive participation for SWD in computing.
Objective: This study investigates the perceived impact of AccessComputing, a previous national BPC alliance supporting SWD, on participants’ computing journeys.
Method: We conducted a mixed-methods survey study of 252 AccessComputing participants. Responses were analyzed using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis.
Result: Quantitative results showed highly positive overall experiences with AccessComputing and strong perceived value across multiple forms of support among participants. Qualitative findings further highlight the program’s impacts and the ways in which AccessComputing facilitated them.
Implication: We discuss implications for how inclusion initiatives can better support disabled students’ participation in computing. Our findings also suggest that AccessComputing, as a sustained national effort, has been playing a meaningful role in increasing participation and that there remains a continued need for the forms of support it provides.
